Ingredients:
  • Topping:
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup quick cooking oats
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 sticks (I0 oz) unsalted butter, melted
  • Filling:
  • 5 pounds gala apples, peeled cored and sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoons orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Preparation Steps:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Butter a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. For the topping: Combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, oats and salt in a bowl. Whisk to make sure the ingredients are completely incorporated. Add be vanilla extract to the melted butter. Stir the butter and v
  3. Pour the apple filling into the buttered baking dish. Using your fingers, crumble the remaining topping over the apples. Bake for 1 hour or until the top is golden brown and the filling has been "singing" (bubbling).
  4. Serve hot topped with ice cream!
